Do You Know How Many Types of Upanishads Are There?

The real number of Upanishads according to traditional source, is 108. According to modern scholars research it is beyond 108, like 200+ Upanishads. From which only 10–13 Upanishads are principle Upanishads or old Upanishads. Many Upanishads are written later which is elaborated about Yoga, Sanyasa, Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Shaktism. As mostly written much later than earlier period it is not considered traditionally.
According to Muktika Upanishad, an ancient text which describes that Lord Rama is said to Hanuman to search about 108 Upanishads, in hindu culture it is accepted as 108.
What are the Principle Upanishads?
The ancient or principle Upanishads are 13, they are considered as the foundation of Vedanta Philosophy. As they are followed by generations of the people of spiritual seekers. They are:-
1. Isha Upanishad :
This Upanishad is associated with Shukla Yajur Veda. The main theme, live a life without worldly pleasure or with detachment and realize the supreme.
2. Kena Upanishad :
It is associated with Sama Veda. The Upanishad described the mind, senses and speech and the sources of these three.
3. Katha Upanishad :
The Katha Upanishad is associated with Krishna Yajur Veda. The dialogues between the lord of death Yama and a eight years child Nachiketa which aware us about immorality and soul.
4. Prashna Upanishad :
It is associated with Atharva Veda. Here the discussion takes place for life, prana and Brahman.
5. Mundaka Upanishad :
It is also associated with Atharva Veda. We will know about “OM(AUM)” and four states of consciousness.
6. Mandukya Upanishad :
Taittriya Upanishad is associated with Krishna Yajur Veda. It describes the five elements or puncha kosha and bliss.
7. Aitreya Upanishad :
Aitreya Upanishad is associated with Rig Veda. This elaborates the creation and nature of self (Atman).
8. Chandogya Upanishad:
This is associated with Sama Veda. The Upanishad contains “Tat tvam Asi” which means “that you are”.
9. Brihadarnyaka Upanishad :
This Upanishad is associated with Shukla Yajur Veda. One of the largest Upanishad and discuss about self, Brahman and liberation.
10. Shvetashatara Upanishad:
Associated with Krishna Yajur Veda. We will know about god, devotion, maya and yoga.
11. Kaushitaki Upanishad:
It is in Rig Veda, which described consciousness, the soul and path to liberation.
12. Maitreyi Upanishad :
It is in Krishna Yajur veda which explore meditation, mind, karma and liberation.
Why are they so important?
People questioned about atman and brahman for centuries. The common questions like “ who am I?”, “ why am I here?”, journey of soul after death and nature of reality etc. So instead of giving them simple explanation they guide the readers to find out the truth themselves. They influenced the people about spiritual thought. And they are the foundation of Vedanta philosophy. And also introduced the concepts of Atman and Brahman which lead towards the moksha. They emphasize inner wisdom rather than external rituals. And the teachings which is most important are- Tat Tvam Asi, Aham Brahmasmi, Prajnanam Brahma, Ayam Atma Brahma etc. These teachings help to focus on ourselves and our inner growth even though they are from our ancient era.
Why they still matter today?
The true value of the Upanishads is not simply in their number, but in the wisdom they offer for centuries, these ancient texts have guided people in exploring life’s biggest questions on self, existence, having a lasting peace etc. The teachings encourage self-discovery, inner growth, and a deeper understanding of the connection between universe and people. Therefore, the readings are for spiritual knowledge, philosophical understanding, or cultural knowledge the Upanishads are remain an epitome for influencing people around the world.
