Can I measure an irregular room's floor area?

When a room is not a neat rectangle, the most reliable approach is to divide it into smaller shapes. I start by sketching the floor from above, marking every corner, doorway, alcove, and change in width. The sketch does not need to be artistic; it only needs clear measurements.
For a simple L-shaped room, draw an imaginary line to make two rectangles. Measure the length and width of each rectangle, multiply those measurements, and add the two areas. For a room with a triangular bay, calculate the rectangle first and then add the triangle. A triangle uses one-half of its base multiplied by its perpendicular height. Keep the units consistent, such as feet throughout or metres throughout.
An awkward corner can often be treated as a rectangle that is missing a smaller rectangle. In that case, find the area of the full outer rectangle and subtract the missing section. This can be quicker than splitting the plan into many pieces. I label each result on the sketch so I do not accidentally count a shared section twice.
For flooring, tile, or paint estimates, I normally add a small allowance after finding the usable area. The allowance depends on the material and the number of cuts, but it should be calculated separately rather than hidden inside the measurements. Recheck every dimension, especially if walls are not parallel. If the room has curved walls, split the curve into a close approximation or use the relevant circle or sector formula.
