For any food business in India, achieving and maintaining FSSAI compliance is non-negotiable. The process is streamlined through the FoSCoS FSSAI registration portal, but understanding the fee structure, documentation, and renewal timelines is key to avoiding penalties. The mandatory food licence or FSSAI registration ensures your business meets the rigorous standards set by the FSSAI.
FSSAI Fees and Validity (1 to 5 Years)
The total government fee for an FSSAI certificate is calculated by multiplying the annual fee by the number of years of validity chosen by the FBO (1 to 5 years).
| License/Registration Type | Annual Fee (Approx.) | Annual Turnover/Scale | Form |
| Basic Registration | ₹100 | Up to ₹12 Lakh | Form A |
| State License | ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 | ₹12 Lakh to ₹20 Crore | Form B |
| Central License | ₹7,500 | Above ₹20 Crore / Multi-state / Import/Export | Form B |
Key Documents Required for FSSAI License/Registration
The documentation varies based on the type of license, but all applications on FoSCoS registration require the following:
-
For Basic Registration (Form A):
-
Passport-size photograph of the proprietor/partner.
-
Proof of possession of premises (Rent Agreement, Electricity Bill, etc.).
-
ID and Address Proof of the concerned person.
-
-
For State/Central License (Form B) – More comprehensive documentation is required:
-
Blueprint/Layout Plan: For manufacturing/processing units, showing dimensions and area allocation.
-
List of Equipment: Name, number, installed capacity, and horsepower of machinery used.
-
Constitution of Business: Partnership Deed, Certificate of Incorporation (MOA/AOA), or Proprietorship Self-Declaration.
-
Water Analysis Report: From an NABL-accredited lab (mandatory for manufacturing units).
-
Food Safety Management System (FSMS) Plan/Certificate.
-
Criticality of FSSAI Renewal
The FSSAI license renewal is perhaps the most overlooked compliance step. Your FSSAI certificate expires after the chosen validity period (1-5 years).
-
Timeline: Renewal application must be filed via FoSCoS at least 30 days prior to the expiry date.
-
Late Fee: If filed after the 30-day window but before expiry, a late fee of ₹100 per day applies.
-
Consequence of Failure: Non-renewal before the expiry date leads to the expiration of the license, forcing the FBO to cease operations and apply for a fresh food licence.
This diligent approach to FSSAI registration, documentation, and mandatory FSSAI renewal through the FoSCoS portal ensures legal operation, builds consumer confidence, and allows for seamless business expansion.
