Bikram Sambat vs Gregorian Calendar for Payroll

Nepal runs on two calendars. The Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar is the official calendar used for government work, festivals, and most salary cycles, while the Gregorian (AD) calendar is used for international business, banking, travel, and digital systems. This post explains why that dual system creates real challenges for HR and payroll teams in Nepal, and why your payroll software must support both.
You will learn what the Bikram Sambat calendar is, including its 12 months from Baisakh to Chaitra, its mid-April new year, and its months of 29 to 32 days that change from year to year. The post then compares it with the Gregorian calendar and sets out the key differences. BS is about 56 years and 8 months ahead, its months begin in the middle of Gregorian months, and its month lengths are not fixed. Because of this, converting BS dates to AD cannot be done with a simple formula. It needs official tables or a reliable date converter, especially when hundreds of attendance records or contract dates are involved.
The post also shows how calendar errors affect payroll, leave, overtime, unpaid leave deductions, SSF deposits, tax filings, and the Nepali fiscal year that starts on Shrawan 1. A single wrong date can delay salaries or lead to a missed compliance deadline.
Finally, it explains how Hajir HRM connects attendance, leave, and payroll in one system so dates stay consistent. HR teams can view records by Nepali month and still export data in AD for audits and year-end reviews.
