What Causes Pigmentation, and Why Type Matters
The phenomenon of pigmentation is caused by overproduction or uneven distribution of the melanin produced by cells called melanocytes. This may be induced by various specific triggers and causes the appearance of different patterns on the skin.
For example, melasma usually manifests itself as symmetrical patches of brown-grey color located on the cheeks, forehead or upper lip and is associated with hormonal changes, sun exposure and occasionally pregnancy or birth control. Sunspots, which are a consequence of chronic UV damage accumulated over time, manifest themselves as well-defined dark spots located on the skin exposed to the sun. The post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is caused by any injury or inflammation of the skin, such as acne or eczema flare-up, waxing or even an insect bite.

Laser toning is performed when pigmentation is more persistent and deeper.
