BESS Solutions for Commercial and Industrial Use: Getting the Sizing Right

Most businesses will always need grid power. What has changed is its price at different times of the day. That change gives businesses a new way to save.
Under Ministry of Power rules from 2023, commercial and industrial consumers with a demand of 10 kW and above were to move to time-of-day tariffs from April 2024. Their peak-hour rate must be at least 20% above the normal rate. Commercial and industrial energy storage lets a factory, cold storage unit or data centre store power before the peak and use it during the peak.
A battery energy storage system (BESS) is designed around each site, so it fits the way your business uses power. The same battery management system (BMS) and inverter can be sized very differently for a 50 kW peak-shaving site and a 500 kW site that needs backup first. Get the size right and the system does the job it was planned for.
How Commercial and Industrial Energy Storage Is Sized
It starts with a load profile. This shows you where the peaks are, , how long they last and how much power the site still uses at night. A BESS power backup system sized these peaks can support the site when it needs power most.
Power and Energy Are Two Different Numbers
Every battery system has two sizes. Power (kW) is how much it can supply at one moment. Energy (kWh) is how much it can store, which decides how long it can keep going.
Renewable energy storage solutions for industrial clients also have to account for the C-rate. A 1C system can deliver all its stored energy in one hour. A 0.5C system takes two hours. This decides whether the system can handle a sudden jump in load or a slow and steady one. Asking about it early helps you get a system that fits your site.
A famous battery in Australia shows why these matters. In 2017, Elon Musk bet that Tesla would get a giant battery in South Australia working within 100 days of signing the contract, or it would be free. Tesla won the bet, with some help. About half the building work was already done when the 100-day clock started.
The battery is called the Hornsdale Power Reserve. It had 100 MW of power but only 129 MWh of energy, about 1.3 hours at full output. Most of its power was kept ready for grid emergencies.
Two weeks after it was switched on, at 1.59 am on 14 December 2017, a coal unit at the Loy Yang A power station in Victoria tripped and 560 MW was suddenly lost. The battery responded within milliseconds, four seconds before the coal generator that was paid to do this job. It was built to react fast, not to run for hours. For any business, decide the job first and then the size.
Plan for the Whole Life of the System
Cycle life is how many times a battery can be charged and used. In commercial BESS solutions, it lasts longest when the system is not discharged too deeply every day and is kept. Thermal management in the enclosure matters as much as the cells inside it.
How Ashbee Energy Approaches Sizing
Ashbee Energy supplies modular BESS battery energy storage systems from 100 kWh to 5 MWh for commercial and industrial clients. We work through the load analysis and system design before any hardware conversation starts
For businesses comparing renewable energy storage solutions, this early engineering conversation is where most of the value is decided.

FAQs
Q. When does a BESS solution make financial sense for a business?
It makes strong financial sense for sites that pay peak-hour tariffs, face regular power cuts or run a DG often. A site study using your bills shows the savings you can expect.
Q. What are the main benefits of a BESS for a business?
A BESS lowers your power costs by using stored energy in expensive peak hours. It can reduce demand charges and cut how long your DG runs. It supports critical equipment during power cuts. It also works with solar to make better use of every unit your panels produce. It is quiet and burns no fuel on site.
Q. Will a BESS work with my existing diesel generator?
Yes. Ashbee Energy integrates the BESS with your existing DG. The battery supports your site first and the DG starts when it is needed, such as during a long outage. In our modelled projections for a typical Indian data centre, this reduces DG runtime by 40 to 80%. Actual results vary by site, tariff and load pattern.
Q. Can a solar battery energy storage system work without solar panels?
Yes. A BESS power backup system can charge from the grid during off-peak hours and discharge during peak tariff hours. This alone can lower your power bill. You can add solar now or later to save even more.
Q. How long does a commercial BESS installation typically take?
It depends on system size, grid connection requirements and the civil work needed for the enclosure. Our own engineers plan the installation and commissioning around your site.
Q. What's the difference between peak shaving and backup priority configurations?
Peak shaving systems are set up to reduce demand charges by discharging when the site's demand is highest, with the grid as the main supply. Backup priority systems keep part of their capacity ready for power cuts at all times. The same hardware can do both jobs at once. Part of the capacity saves money every day and part stays ready for power cuts.
