Bauer Bodoni: Do AI Overviews Send Traffic or Just Answers?

Do AI Overviews send traffic? Yes, but far less than classic search results send. AI Overviews answer the question on the results page and cite only a few sources, so most readers never click. The full picture, with Bauer Bodoni's step-by-step AI Overviews guide, shows which clicks survive and which ones disappear.

What does an AI Overview actually show?

An AI Overview is a short AI-written summary at the top of Google's results, with links to the pages it used as sources. It answers the question on the results page, so the reader may never need to scroll to the classic links below.

Google says its AI Overview already reaches 2.5 billion users. In India, overviews appear for 26.8% of keywords, against 20.5% in the US (Ahrefs, via Bauer Bodoni's guide). About 81% of overview queries happen on mobile (WordStream, via the guide).

So do AI Overviews send traffic, or just answers?

Mostly answers, with some traffic. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults in March 2025 and found they clicked a classic result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Only about 1% of visits led to a click on a link inside the summary itself.

Ahrefs' later analysis (December 2025 data) found the top page's click-through rate 58% lower with an overview present. A 2026 field experiment (Indian School of Business and Carnegie Mellon) found clicks to regular results down 39.8% when an overview appeared.

The direction is consistent. The limit matters too: these studies measure US or general search, not India specifically, and no India-specific click-loss figure was found. AI Overviews shrink clicks, but they do not end them. A cited link still brings readers who want more than the summary gave them.

Which pages lose the most clicks, and which keep them?

Informational pages lose the most, and commercial pages keep the most. AI Overviews appear for 21.4% of informational keywords, against only 2.1% of transactional keywords (Ahrefs, via the guide).

Length matters too: queries of seven or more words trigger overviews 46.4% of the time, against 9.5% for one-word queries. Local services trigger them only 2.2% of the time (NP Digital, via the guide).

There is a second route in. Google builds answers from several related searches at once, a process it calls query fan-out, so a page can be cited for a sub-question even without ranking for the main query. About 38% of overview citations also rank in Google's top 10 (Ahrefs).

How do you check what AI Overviews do to your site?

Check Search Console's free Generative AI performance report, not just your sessions. It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode over time, by page, device, and country.

Google rolled this report out to all websites on 31 August 2026. The key distinction is that impressions are not visits: an appearance inside an AI answer is not a session on your site. Before you conclude that revenue fell, compare enquiries, calls, and form fills against sessions.

Check the gate first. In Search Console, go to Settings, then Search generative AI, and make sure "Include my site's links and content" is selected. If someone changed it, your site gets no traffic or impressions from AI features at all. Exclusion is not a ranking signal for classic search, and it does not stop AI training. That protection is a separate control called Google-Extended.

What should you fix first if AI Overviews ignore your pages?

Fix the answer itself first, then the proof around it. Put a clear, complete answer directly under each heading, in the first two lines, naming the subject instead of starting with "it".

Then give those systems something worth citing:

- Cover one topic on one complete page, including the main question and its natural follow-ups, instead of twenty thin pages. Google warns that separate variation pages made mainly to manipulate rankings or AI answers break its scaled content abuse policy.

- Add original facts. Cited articles cover 62% more facts than uncited ones (Surfer, via the guide), and adding statistics and citations can raise AI visibility by 40% (Aggarwal and colleagues, 2024).

- Build trust beyond your own site. Brands are 6.5 times more likely to be cited through third-party sources than through their own domains (AirOps, via the guide). In AI Overviews specifically, YouTube is the most-cited source at 21.1%, followed by Reddit at 18.5% (Ahrefs). Never buy fake mentions: Google says its spam systems are designed to catch them.

- Write for India as your customers search it. Bauer Bodoni tested 16 question-style SEO queries on 24 October 2026 from Delhi NCR, on mobile and logged out: eight in English, four in Hindi, and four in Hinglish. Overviews appeared for all 16, but these were selected queries, not a trigger rate. All four Hinglish queries returned answers in Devanagari, not Roman script, and several Hindi answers drew on translated English pages. A page written only in Roman-script Hinglish does not match the answer Google shows, so cover the topic clearly in English and, where it fits, in Hindi. Do not assume one answer fits every language either: "How long does SEO take?" gave three to six months in English and Hindi, but four to six months in Hinglish.

Does being cited in an AI Overview guarantee traffic?

No. A citation puts your link inside the answer, but Pew found only about 1% of visits led to a click on a cited link. Treat a citation as visibility and trust first, and traffic second.

Should you opt out of AI Overviews to protect your traffic?

No. Opting out is the surest way to get zero AI traffic: an excluded site gets no traffic or impressions from AI features, while its classic rankings stay unaffected. The control also does not stop AI training.

How long does it take for a new page to appear in AI Overviews?

There is no fixed time. A page must be indexed, allowed to show a snippet, and ranking well for the question and its follow-ups before Google can cite it. Track it in Search Console's Generative AI report rather than guessing from sessions.

AI Overviews will keep answering more questions on the results page. The businesses that win are the ones AI answers quote by name, on the questions their customers actually ask. If your pages are invisible in AI answers, talk to Bauer Bodoni about making them quotable.
