Since then he has tuned it every six months to keep it at its peak. In general, the pace may be ‘one grade per year’ with most children being able to achieve Preliminary grade within one year of lessons, provided they do a little practice. Even 5 minutes a day, or ten minutes a few times a week, will really zoom the child’s progress. However even children who don’t practice at all will progress, though more slowly.
For example, changes in temperature and humidity levels can cause wooden components to warp or crack, and the felt on the hammers can wear down, affecting the tone and touch of the piano. In addition, regular use of the piano can cause mechanical components to become misaligned or damaged, leading to issues such as sticky keys or a sluggish action. A pitch raise is necessary when a piano has not been tuned for a long time and the overall pitch has dropped well below the standard reference level.
