Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) causes permanent motor deficit "cerebral palsy (CP)," and may result in significant disability and death. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) had been established as the first effective therapy for neonates with HIE; however, TH must be initiated within the first 6 hours after birth, and the number needed to treat is from 9 to 11 to prevent brain damage from HIE. Therefore, additional therapies for HIE are highly needed. In this review, we provide an introduction on the mechanisms of HIE cascade and how TH and cell therapies such as umbilical cord blood cells and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), especially umbilical cord-derived MSCs (UC-MSCs), may protect the brain in newborns, and discuss recent progress in regenerative therapies using UC-MSCs for neurological disorders.
The brain damage process "HIE cascade" was divided into six stages (1) energy depletion, (2) impairment of microglia, (3) inflammation, (4) excitotoxity, (5) oxidative stress, and (6) apoptosis in capillary, glia, synapse and/or neuron. The authors showed recent 13 clinical trials using UC-MSCs for neurological disorders.
The authors suggest that the next step will include reaching a consensus on cell therapies for HIE and establishment of effective protocols for cell therapy for HIE.

Umbilical venous catheters (UVC) are widely used in neonatal intensive care (NICU). Noncentral catheter position is known to be associated with multiple adverse complications; however, risk factors for catheter malposition are unclear. This work aimed to identify clinical risk factors and complications associated with UVC malposition in neonates admitted in an NICU.
A retrospective chart review was performed of inborn babies admitted to BC Women's Hospital NICU with UVC inserted in their first 7 days between July 2016 and June 2018. Infant and maternal demographic, radiograph, UVC-related data, and complications were reviewed.
A total of 257 infants had UVC placed; 158 (61%) and 99 (39%) were in central and noncentral positions after initial placement, respectively. Of initially central-placed UVCs, a further 35 (22%) were pulled back or migrated to malposition on follow-up X-ray. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed the use of larger UV (5 Fr) catheter (odds ratio [OR] 2.5, 95% confidVC migration was found after initial central placement, warranting surveillance..
This study aimed to describe maternal characteristics and clinical outcomes of infants born to mothers with positive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) tests during pregnancy at an urban, safety-net hospital in Boston.
We abstracted electronic chart data from 75 pregnant women with positive SARS-CoV-2 tests at any stage of gestation until 72 hours after birth who delivered consecutively between March 31 and August 6, 2020 at our center. We collected clinical data on maternal and infant characteristics, including testing, signs, and symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), delivery outcomes, newborn care practices (skin-to-skin care, location of care, and breastfeeding) and 30-day postdischarge infant emergency room visits and readmissions. We described categorical characteristics as percentages for this case series.
Among 75 pregnant women, 47 (63%) were Hispanic, 10 (13%) had hypertension, 23 (30%) had prepregnancy obesity, and 57 (76%) had symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infec women with SARS-CoV-2 positive testing at our center, five infants (7%) had one or more SARS-CoV-2 positive tests in the first week of life.. · Infants with positive SARS-CoV-2 tests had clinical courses expected for gestational age..
This study aimed to ascertain the effects of astaxanthin (ASX) in an experimental necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) model using rat pups.
Forty-two pups born from five Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into three groups as the control group, NEC + placebo (saline), and NEC + ASX. Pups in the NEC + ASX group were given 100 mg/kg/day oral ASX from day 1 to day 4 of the study. Saline of 2 mL/kg was given to the NEC + placebo group. Histopathological, immunohistochemical (caspase-3), and biochemical evaluations including the total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), lipid hydroperoxide (LPO), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), myeloperoxidase (MPO), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nfr-2) activities were all performed.
A better survival rate and weight gain were demonstrated in the NEC + ASX group (
< 0.05). In the heffect of ASX on the experimental NEC rat model..
