The word 'Mahamrityunjay' comes from the Sanskrit language and is made up of three Hindi words:

 Maha - Great

 Mrityu - Death

Jaya - Victory

The Mahamrityunjay Mantra is a death-conquering mantra that originated from the Rig Veda. It is believed that Lord Shiva gave this mantra to Rishi Markandeya, who then shared this with mankind. It is a spiritual and powerful remedy against fear and untimely death. It has 32 syllables, and its recital protects against illnesses, shields against misfortunes, and gives the feeling of safety and security.

What is the meaning of the Mahamrityunjay Mantra?

Om Trayambakam Yajamahe, Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanam,

Urvarukmiv Bandhanat, Mrityurmokshaya Mamratat

The mantra means:

I worship Lord Shiva, who is in the form of Omkar. He is beautiful with three eyes, is fragrant, and nourishes us. I pray to you to give me freedom from the cycle of life and death in the same way some fruit falls off a stem and gets freedom from the bondage of a tree.

Story Behind Mahamrityunjay Mantra

In ancient times, Rishi Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati were great devotees of Lord Shiva. They did not have a child, so they decided to meditate and offer long penance to Lord Shiva to ask him for a boon of childbirth. For years, they prayed, and seeing their dedication, Lord Shiva became happy and gave them two choices - to give birth to an intelligent child but with a short life or a low-intelligence child with a long life.

Rishi Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati chose to accept the first offer. As a result, they gave birth to an intelligent son with only 12 years of lifespan and named him Markandeya. Although they never told this condition to their son, they started worrying as he started to approach the age of 12. Young Markandeya observed this and asked his parents the truth. When he became aware of his short life, he decided to pray to Lord Shiva. He sat in the Shiva temple and prayed for days. Then, on the day of his death, Yamraj's doot came to take him to the afterlife, but he was too engrossed in the meditation that they could not take his soul. When Lord Yamraj himself came to take Markandeya, he ran away and hugged the Shivlinga. Impressed by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and protected Markandeya against Yamraj and gave him a book of long life.
