Down to Punakha is also a beautiful ride. The road runs in subtropical valleys. As you reach the Punakha Dzong -nestled between two rivers -you'll realise why this trip is considered a legend.

Punakha to Phobjikha Valley - Valley through Black Mountains
There are relatively few tourists who take this route. It's the right reason to do so.
This drive leads you through the Black Range of Bhutan into the spacious glimpse of glacial Phobjikha Valley. The valley is open, level and desolately beautiful. One of the places where you really feel like the sky is endless and you are truly in Bhutan.
The rare black-necked crane also lives in the valley during winter. From November to February, they may be seen flying over fields.
The highway has little traffic. Barely any traffic. Essentially, a forest, mist and mountains.

3. Paro to Haa Valley: Bhutan's best-kept secret
Very few travellers reach the Haa Valley. Unfortunately, it's just the drive that's worth it.
You cross the Chele La Pass at the highest motorable pass in Bhutan, meaning 3988 metres. The vistas from the summit are dazzling. Prayer flags fly in all directions. The mountain peaks are capped with snow in the background. The weather is fresh and cold.
The valley opens up quietly as you walk down Haa. No crowds. No rush. One of Bhutan's virgin landscapes.

4. Thimphu to Trongsa
This is Bhutan's main central highway. And it's different from anything you've driven before!
The route passes by gorge crossings along the mountain rivers, crosses high passes and passes through thick rhododendron forests. You travel through little villages with their enduring life. The yaks are grazing on the hillside. The monks are marching by the side of the road.
The highlight is the fortress-monastery of Trongsa. It can easily be seen from the road, well before you reach it. It's never dull.

5. Bumthang to Ura Valley -The Road Less Travelled
Bumthang is already one of the most spiritual areas in the Kingdom of Bhutan. But head further east to the Ura Valley, where it's a totally different landscape.
This area has rugged and expansive terrain. Rolling meadows, old farm houses, and a village that may have at best little changed over the course of centuries. The drive on its own isn't very long, but it's very satisfying.
Few tourists ever go to Ura. But those who do seldom forget it.
