Neonatal seizures are the most frequent type of neurological emergency in newborn infants, often being a consequence of prolonged perinatal asphyxia. Phenobarbital is currently the most widely used antiseizure drug for treatment of neonatal seizures, but fails to stop them in ~50% of cases. In a neonatal hypoxia-only model based on 11-day-old (P11) rats, the NKCC1 inhibitor bumetanide was reported to potentiate the antiseizure activity of phenobarbital, whereas it was ineffective in a human trial in neonates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of clinically relevant doses of bumetanide as add-on to phenobarbital on neonatal seizures in a noninvasive model of birth asphyxia in P11 rats, designed for better translation to the human term neonate.Intermittent asphyxia was induced for 30minutes by exposing the rat pups to three 7+3-minute cycles of 9% and 5% O
at constant 20% CO
. Opevesostat research buy Drug treatments were administered intraperitoneally either before or immediately after asphyxia.
All untreated model of birth asphyxia, which is consistent with the negative data of the recent human trial. The translational data obtained with the novel rat model of birth asphyxia indicate that it is a useful tool to evaluate novel treatments for neonatal seizures.Pectobacterium carotovorum is a phytopathogenic bacteria that causes significant economic loses in food crops, such as bell pepper, which is of special significance in the value of production and trade in Mexico. Therefore, a solution for fruit conservation must be sought. Due to environmental concerns, it is necessary the use of environmentally-friendly active packaging. In this article, chitosan and chitosan-thyme essential oil nanocoatings were used for the preservation of green bell pepper. Different formulations based on chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) and chitosan-thyme essential oil nanoparticles (15, 30, and 45%) were prepared. For uncoated and coated bell peppers, the quality and physiological variables of inoculated and uninoculated fruit with P. carotovorum during 12-day storage period were assessed. According to the results, the weight loss of the fruit remained almost constant over the storage days for the different formulations. A decrease in fruit firmness and an increase in the respiration rate and ascorbic acid content until day 8 with a decrease at the end of the storage period were observed. Of all the evaluated nanocoatings, the fruit treated with the formulation containing 15% CSNPs showed the lowest colony-forming units and disease incidence. Also, the coated bell peppers with this formulation had lower CO2 production compared to the remaining treatments, and the weight loss and firmness were maintained. Therefore, the use of CSNP coatings could represent a good alternative for the protection of bell pepper against the pathogenic bacteria P. carotovorum. PRACTICAL APPLICATION The results of the application of nanocoatings based on chitosan and chitosan-thyme essential oil as an antibacterial agent against P. carotovorum on green bell pepper during 12-day storage period suggest that nanoparticle-based coatings can be a natural option for the preservation of fruit quality during ripening.
Hypercoagulability and thromboembolism are prominent features of severe COVID-19, and ongoing anticoagulant use might be protective.
We conducted a nationwide register-based cohort study in Sweden, February through May, 2020, to assess whether ongoing direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) use was associated with reduced risk of hospital admission for laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, or a composite of intensive care unit (ICU) admission or death due to laboratory-confirmed COVID-19.
DOAC use (n=103703) was not associated with reduced risk of hospital admission for COVID-19 (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] [95% confidence interval] 1.00 [0.75-1.33] vs. nonuse atrial fibrillation comparator [n=36 875]; and aHR 0.94 [0.80-1.10] vs. nonuse cardiovascular disease comparator [n=355 699]), or ICU admission or death due to COVID-19 (aHRs 0.76 [0.51-1.12], and 0.90 [0.71-1.15], respectively).
Ongoing DOAC use was not associated with reduced risk of severe COVID-19, indicating that prognosis would not be modified by early outpatient DOAC initiation.

The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of calcified atheromas in carotid arteries (CACA) on panoramic radiographs of patients with liver cirrhosis (LC).
A case-control study of 67 individuals with LC (case group) and 67 healthy individuals (control group), matched by gender and age, was performed. In addition to demographic information, data on LC were also collected for the case group. Panoramic radiographs were evaluated by two previously calibrated examiners. The sample consisted predominantly of male individuals (n=50; 74.62%), with mean age of 55 years old. In the case group, the mean value for the model of end-stage liver disease was 16, and the major aetiology of LC was alcoholism (n=26; 38.8%). Thirteen (19.4%) LC patients had CACA, whereas only four (5.9%) healthy patients had this condition. LC patients are 3.72 times more likely to have CACA compared to healthy individuals (P=.02). The presence of nephropathies increases the risk of development of atheromas by 18.58 times in cirrhotic individuals (P=.04).
Cirrhotic patients are more likely to have CACA compared to healthy patients, and this risk increases significantly when kidney disease is involved.

Distant cutaneous metastasis is extremely rare. Here, we describe two cases of mesothelioma metastatic to the head and neck skin. Case 1 A 64-year-old man diagnosed previously with extensive thoracic and abdominal mesothelioma, developed a rapidly growing right upper lip lesion, for which a wedge resection was performed. Case 2 A 77-year-old woman with a history of pleural mesothelioma developed a firm, mobile subcutaneous nodule on the right lateral forehead, clinically thought to represent either an epidermal inclusion cyst or a lipoma. A punch biopsy was performed. In both cases, histopathologic evaluation revealed dermal proliferation of epithelioid cells with moderate cytologic atypia and three mitotic figures per mm2 and two mitotic figures per mm2 for Cases 1 and 2, respectively. Immunohistochemical studies revealed the lesional cells to be positive for WT1, mesothelin, D2-40, CK5/6, while being negative for melanocytic and other keratinocytic markers, supporting a diagnosis of metastatic mesothelioma.
