Importance of Use of Public Transport for Environmental Benefits

Almost 85% of CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the transportation sector, and most of it is caused by private transport. And for quite a few years, various studies have suggested that the use of public transport to avoid pollution is the only practical and quick way of making the environment more sustainable. Governments worldwide are adopting new ways of encouraging their citizens to take public transport to schools, colleges, and offices every day. Hence enhancing the use of public transport is crucial to control pollution and here’s how it can offer environmental benefits.

  • Reduces the use of private vehicles

When individuals decide to use public transport, they can conserve energy and reduce their carbon footprint by eliminating the use of private vehicles. When a single person switches to public transportation, they can reduce almost 10% of all greenhouse gases produced by a two-car household. They can also save nearly 30% of carbon dioxide this way.

Various companies have adopted design-centered thinking for developing effective programs for encouraging public transport among employees, such as offering transportation cost reimbursement.

  • Reducing fuel dependency

By adopting public transportation, people can save millions of gallons of diesel and patrol annually, thereby protecting the nonrenewable sources of energy and preventing the pollution that is caused while extracting them. The use of public transport results in fewer fill-ups of automobiles every day.

  • Effective sustainable action

Public transportation is an immediate alternative that individuals can use to reduce their carbon footprint and energy use. The use of public transportation is a more beneficial action in terms of energy-saving methods as it exceeds all benefits offered by other energy-saving household activities like adjusting thermostats or incorporating energy-efficient light tubes and bulbs.

  • Lesser Congestion

With every passing day, the amount of automobiles in the city is growing rapidly, leading to less space for both people and their vehicles. Now, cars take a lot of space. Now, twenty people individually traveling in a car would take more space than the same people traveling together in a bus. When there is less space, there would be more congestion, resulting in slower traffic. This congestion, in turn, leads to more fuel dependency, air pollution, and noise pollution. Hence, the use of public transport to avoid pollution is the perfect method of limiting pollution in the cities.

Wrapping Up

Environmental problems and climate change are the biggest challenges that the whole world is facing at the moment. It is high time that countries worldwide and their citizens become environmentally conscious about their daily choices and decisions and how they affect the environment. Hence, people have to actively make choices indulge in design centered thinking and decisions that would reduce or minimize the harmful impact on the environment. Therefore, one of the most efficient ways of contributing to nature conservation as well as tackling climate change is by using more and more public transport. That way, everyone would be able to ensure an inhabitable, sustainable living environment for the future generation.
